Avoid These Common Lawn Oopsies For Green Grass That Lasts

The sun is finally staying out to play, and if you’re like most of our Goodwyn Homes family, you’re probably itching to get out there and turn your lawn into a lush, emerald carpet. There is nothing quite like the pride of a perfectly manicured yard to make your home the star of the street!

However, sometimes our "tender loving care" can be a little too much for our grass to handle. To help you keep your lawn thriving (and your property value soaring!), we’ve rounded up the most common lawn care mistakes that can accidentally send your grass to the big compost heap in the sky. Let’s keep it green, shall we?

The "Butchered" Look (Mowing Too Short)

We get it—you want to save time by mowing as low as possible so you don’t have to do it again for two weeks. But hold those blades!

  • The Mistake: Cutting your grass too short (scalping) prevents it from photosynthesizing properly and exposes the soil to weed seeds.
  • The Goodwyn Rule: Never remove more than one-third of the grass blade at a time. Taller grass shades the soil, keeps moisture in, and grows deeper roots. Think of it as a protective sun hat for your yard!

The "Sip and Spritz" (Improper Watering)

Are you giving your lawn a light sprinkle every evening? You might be doing more harm than good.

  • The Mistake: Frequent, shallow watering encourages "lazy" shallow roots that can’t handle a hot afternoon.
  • The Better Way: Go for deep and infrequent watering. Aim for about an inch of water per week, delivered in one or two long sessions. This forces the roots to grow deep into the earth to find a drink, making them tough and resilient!

The "Lawn Health" Scorecard

  • Dull Mower Blades — Tears the grass (shaggy & brown) — Mistake! Sharpen every spring.
  • Fertilizing in Heat — "Burned" yellow patches — Mistake! Wait for cooler days.
  • Leaving Grass Clippings — Natural nutrients for the soil — Win! Let them lay (mulching).
  • Watering at Night — Fungal growth and mildew — Mistake! Aim for 4 AM – 8 AM.

The "More is Better" Fertilizer Myth

We love a little boost, but when it comes to nitrogen, you can definitely have too much of a good thing.

  • The Mistake: Dumping a whole bag of fertilizer in one spot or applying it during a drought.
  • The Consequence: This creates "fertilizer burn," leaving unsightly yellow or brown streaks that can take months to heal. Always follow the instructions on the bag and use a spreader for an even "glow-up."

Ignoring the "Thatch" Build-up

Over time, a layer of dead grass and debris can form a thick mat between the green blades and the soil.

  • The Mistake: Letting thatch get more than half an inch thick.
  • The Fix: If your lawn feels "spongy" when you walk on it, it might be time for a light raking or aeration. This lets your grass breathe and allows water to actually reach the roots instead of sliding off the top!
