Summer is almost here which means that there are a couple of things that need to get done. Everyone loves a green luscious yard that stays that way throughout the summer. At times that can be hard to accomplish. If you have recently bought a new home more than likely sod has just been put down. Even if sod hasn’t been put down recently, keeping your yard green is a challenge. For those who had sod put down, there are different protocols than normal grass. The biggest difference is how much water is needed. There are a couple of things that need to be done to accomplish green grass during the summer.

Cut it low

The first thing to do for the season is to cut your grass down low. You don’t want to cut it so low that there isn’t any grass left but you want it to cut a little lower than what you normally cut it at during the rest of the season. This would include native grass and sod. A good fresh cut will help it to grow the rest of the season. If your grass leaves a lot of grass clippings after you cut it low make sure to bag them. You can either put a bag on the lawnmower for them to go into or you can rake afterward and bag them then. This will be the only time you cut your grass this short. Afterward, you’ll wait about two weeks and then start cutting your grass to normal length.

Fertilizer is important. There are several different types of fertilizers. A starter fertilizer is what you are going to want to put on the grass right after you cut it low. This type of fertilizer causes your grass to grow upwards. Another type of fertilizer that is used during the other seasons such as the fall causes the roots of the grass to grow longer. This is what we want to happen during the winter which is why we use that type of fertilizer in the fall.

Watering your grass is very essential to its growth. Many cities have codes and ordinances so check with yours before you pick a time and how much to water your grass. The best time to water your grass is early in the morning. How long you water for is dependent on the type of soil you have. You want to make sure that the amount of time you water for will saturate to at least 6 inches down. This is the length of a good healthy root system in the grass. Also, note that you only should water about twice a week as a maximum. This trains the roots to grow deeper.

This summer make sure your lawn is looking the best on the block by doing a couple of these simple lawn tricks. They take a little time but it is well worth the effort. This won’t just help your yard this summer but also in the years to come. Goodwyn Builder provides affordable homes to everyone. We want your home to stay just as beautiful as the day you bought it.
