How To Keep Your House Smelling Fresh Naturally

Most store-bought air fresheners are filled with toxic chemicals that over time can have a negative impact on you and your family’s health. Most contain phthalates, a chemical that is prohibited from beauty products in the UK, even the ones labeled as unscented or natural. Scented candles can give off carcinogens when burned which can be an issue, especially in a closed room. Many reed diffusers contain dipropylene glycol or ethanol, both a potential hazard to children and pets.

So how can you ditch the chemicals but keep your home smelling fresh? Here are a few tips for just that.

Open Those Windows

What could be more natural than sunlight and fresh air? Simply opening the windows regularly can go a long way for freshening the home. And sunlight is a natural germ killer so let in that sunlight to clean up the air and help remove bad smells.

A Spicy Solution

With cinnamon and a saucepan, you can have your house smelling great in no time. Just add a couple of cinnamon sticks or a sprinkle of cinnamon to boiling water and simmer until the smell spreads throughout your space.

Use Citrus to Clean

A cleaning solution with lemon juice can make a great cleaner that not only removes dirt and scum but also fills the space with a wonderful fruity scent. If you need more scrubbing power add some baking soda. Baking soda is great for removing tough substances and for absorbing unwanted smells.

Room Spray

Continuing the same thought as above, use citrus and baking soda to make a room spray. The baking soda will absorb odors and the citrus will add a fresh clean smell. This is an inexpensive, simple, and natural solution to unwanted smells.

Bake Something Yummy

Have you ever walked into a home, and you could tell there was something yummy cooking on the stove? It is hard to beat the smell of fresh-baked chocolate chip cookies. Another option is to sauté some fresh onions. Great for stews, soups, and making a house feel like home. The best part of this solution is that you end up with something delicious to eat!

A Truly Green Solution

Plants are wonderful for decorating the home because of their beauty as well as their ability to filter the air. Some flowers are especially fragrant and can be made into a bouquet for the dining room table or living room.

The Smell of a New Day

Fresh ground coffee beans do not only make for a better cup of java, but it also fills the room with a fantastic scent of coffee.

DIY Herb Sachets

With some muslin and cotton bags and dried herbs, flowers, or spices you can create your own scent diffusers for the closet or dresser.
