How to Know When to Get Rid of Stuff

Every year it pops in our head that we need to get rid of things in our home. The problem is it can be hard to know whether to throw something away or not. Whether you fight sentimentality, that you think you’ll use it someday, or you don’t know why you can’t part with it, we will help you figure out if it really should be thrown away. The first thing that you must ask yourself is: when is the last time I used it? Generally, if you haven’t used it in the last 6 months then it needs to go. This can be very difficult though if you’re a sentimental person. You tend to want to keep most things because this person or that person gave that item to you. However, when it comes to this rule, you need to stick to it or you’ll end up keeping most things you never use. If you’re really in a tough spot about whether to get rid of it then sleep on it. Don’t make any rash decisions especially if your trash day is the following morning.

When you’ve woken up and you’re thinking about your trash pile, there are some tougher questions that you’ll need to ask yourself. If it is just something you feel you can’t part with, then keep it. But if you’re on the fence about it, then ask yourself if it is something that you really need or not. And if it is something you really need, then why haven’t you used in the last 6 months? As humans we can convince ourselves of almost anything. So, if you have convinced yourself that you need to keep it then keep track whether you use it in the next 6 months. If you haven’t used it in a year, then there is no reason for it to continue to take up space.
