Budget Friendly Ways to Reduce Heat Loss

Our Goodwyn homes are always built with energy efficient materials. We want your home to be affordable to live in, not just to purchase. One thing that can seriously affect the affordability of your home is poor insulation. If your home is feeling drafty, here are some budget friendly suggestions that will aid in heat retention. That way, your heating can stay inside your house and your dollars can stay in your wallet.

Storm Doors

Storm doors offer a lot in the way of protection from the elements. They may run you a few hundred dollars up front, but they are sturdy and will last for many years to come. Storm doors offer protection in two ways. One, they add a layer of insulation between your main door and the outside. Second, they block weather like cold winds, ice, and snow from coming in direct contact with your main door. Thus, preventing cold air from seeping into your home and discouraging warm air from escaping.

Increase Insulation

Attics are often major contributors to heat loss. For one thing, heat rises and sometimes it keeps rising all the way out through your attic. And another fact is that attics are often minimally insulated. If you have ever visited your attic in the summer or winter, you will have experienced the extreme temperature differences. For a few dollars, you can pick up one or two rolls of insulation from your local home improvement store. Stuff some extra sheets into the frame of the attic and you will surely be able to tell the difference.

In addition to regular insulation, bubble wrap can prove to be a great temporary fix. Poorly functioning windows are another area in which heat escapes your home. Replacing your windows with more energy efficient double pane windows can be quite costly. If you are not yet in a position to make that upgrade, you can tape bubble wrap over your current windows. Bubble wrap is an excellent insulator that will still allow natural light to shine through. Plus, it is easily removed when the weather begins to warm up again.

Caulking

Another way that windows can let heat escape is when they are not sealed properly. A tube of caulking will only set you back a few dollars, and it can make a world of difference. Go around to all your windows and search for gaps. You can hold a flame to any suspicious spots and if air interacts with it, you know you have a draft. Then you can pipe a bead of caulking along the affected area to seal the window properly.

These are just a few ways that you can increase heat retention in your home, but if you want a home that is energy efficient from the start, look no further than Goodwyn Building. Browse our available listings today!
